Stream Leaders Program Materials

The Stream Leaders program is intended to provide students with an educational experience in water quality monitoring, data interpretation, and citizen action, as well as provide general information to local officials concerning water quality. First, students and teachers get in the river and examine the chemical constituents of the river, inventory physical stream-side conditions and land uses that may affect water quality, and sample the aquatic biological communities to evaluate the health of the river. Second, students and teachers analyze their data to locate any possible sources of pollution problems within the river. In the final part of the Stream Leaders, students and teachers identify and complete a civic action project such as collecting and cataloging river, lake and beach debris, restoring degraded habitats, or making community presentations.

Earth Force GREEN

The watershed council works in partnership with Earth Force GREEN (Global Rivers Environmental Education Network) to bring curriculum and resource tools to area educators. Protecting Our Watersheds (POW) is a curriculum that takes students through the process of developing and implementing a community action project to improve water quality.

For more than 10 years, GM facilities have used GREEN resources to support the Stream Leaders program and the participating area schools. GM and its facilities provide funding, employee volunteers and support to invest young people in protecting their watersheds.

Visit Earth Force: Programs: GREEN for more information.

Stream Leaders Program Materials
The following files are available for download in PDF format. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to open these files. Please contact our Education Director at 248-601-0606 or educator@crwc.org if you have any problems.

  • Stream Leaders Introduction: This is a general description of the water quality monitoring program for students, its goals and objectives, what's expected from you as the participant, and what the watershed council contributes.
  • Michigan Science Correlations: Here you can view a table that correlates the Stream Leaders program to the elementary, middle school, and high school Michigan Curriculum Framework Science Benchmarks.
  • Stream Leaders Costs: This shows you just how little you need to get involved in the program, and just how much you might already have on-hand.
  • Stream Leaders Timetable: The timetable provides you with a simple means of knowing what you should be doing when to have a quality Stream Leaders program.
  • Macomb County Public Works Presentation: This is a special opportunity for Macomb County schools. The Macomb County Public Works Office offers an award-winning Water and the Urban Environment presentation free to Macomb County schools. This is a great way to use your Stream Leaders data for a civic action project.
  • Wader Safety: Anytime you get into the water there are precautions and guidelines to follow. This just outlines a few things to be especially aware of in an urban setting.
  • Press Release Form: This is the sheet you need to fill out and send to CRWC at least two weeks prior to your sampling date. If you don't, you won't be in the press releases that we send out.
  • Data Forms & Sampling Instructions:
  • Aquatic Insect Labels: Here you will find two pages of insect labels. Be sure and print them on a laser printer so they don't bleed when you put them in alcohol.
  • Wastewater Treatment Plant Protocols: Here you can find the contact information for the watershed wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and their requirements for testing your samples.
  • Wastewater Treatment Sample Submittal Form: This is the form you should use to submit water samples to a wastewater treatment plant for testing.
  • Internet Links: Here are tons of materials and information available on the web. Here are a few we recommend that will help you with Stream Leaders or Science Olympiad.
  • Aquatic Education Materials: This is an eight-page list of aquatic activity books, coloring books, comic books, story books and informational books along with their contact information.
  • Maps of the Clinton River Watershed:
