Michigan Clean Marina Program

The Lake St. Clair Clean Boating Campaign is a partnership between the Anchor Bay Yachting Association (ABYA), the Marine Environmental Education Foundation (MEEF), and the Clinton River Watershed Council (CRWC) to educate boaters about clean boating practices to protect the Clinton River and Lake St. Clair. We use MEEF's Dockwalkers program to train boaters in everyday clean boating practices. These trained "Dockwalkers" then share what they've learned with their fellow boaters.

Together we all can to our part to:

  • Keep our rivers and lakes free of garbage, trash and other debris
  • Dispose of boat waste properly when returning to shore
  • Set a good stewardship example
  • Encourage fellow boaters, anglers, family and friends to protect our water resources

Lake St. Clair, the "Heart of the Great Lakes," is the smallest lake in the Great Lakes system. This heart-shaped lake is the connecting waterbody between Lake Huron (via the St. Clair River) and Lake Erie (via the Detroit River). Lake St. Clair is bordered by Michigan, Ontario, and Walpole Island Indian Reservation. The mouth of the St. Clair River in the northeastern portion of the lake is the largest freshwater delta system in the Great Lakes.

The water quality on the American side of Lake St. Clair is a major contributing factor to our quality of life and recreational interests. An estimated 130,000 registered boats on Lake St. Clair support a $250 million recreational boating industry. Lake St. Clair is 430 squqre miles with an average depth of 10 feet. That's a lot of boats and a lot of people on such a small lake!

The Dockwalkers program addresses individual boat pollution such as:

  • Oil and fuel
  • Sewage and pumpouts
  • Boat cleaning and maintenance
  • Hazardous and solid waste
  • Boating litter and fish waste
  • Aquatic nuisance species

Clean Boating Resources

Michigan Clean Marina Program
The Michigan Clean Marina program is a public-private partnership involving the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Michigan Boating Industry Association, and the Michigan Sea Grant. The Clean Marina program encourages marinas to develop technically sound and economically achievable approaches to prevent non-point source pollution in our waterways. Participating marinas are eligible to receive the "Clean Marina" designation.
