Pollution Prevention Tip Cards

Bear Creek is the stream that carries rain and snowmelt runoff from Center Line, Hazel Park, Madison Heights and Warren into the Red Run Drain. The Red Run flows northeast into the Clinton River and then into Lake St. Clair. As our communities become more urbanized, stormwater pollution threatens water quality in our rivers and lakes.

Location Map

The Bear Creek Restoration Project was developed to clean up our waterways and improve the quality of life for Center Line, Hazel Park, Madison Heights and Warren residents. Our goal is to rehabilitate Bear Creek to support aquatic life, wildlife and recreational opportunities - such as canoeing and swimming - downstream and along Lake St. Clair.

Grant-funded by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the Bear Creek Restoration Project was coordinated by the Clinton River Watershed Council and led by a committee of county and city officials, business leaders and concerned citizens. The restoration plan adopted by this committee recommends:

  • Effective lawn care and landscaping practices
  • Urban redevelopment, parking lot and drain improvements
  • Sewer investigations and improvements
  • Increased public awareness and community-based action
  • Pilot projects for water pollutant removal
