Stony Creek Watershed
Stony Creek is a warmwater tributary in the middle of the Clinton River watershed. The two branches (Main and West) of Stony Creek have a combined length of almost 35 miles, along with almost 10 more miles of tributary streams. The creek drains a land area of 73 square miles, including parts of Addison, Bruce, Oakland, and Washington townships, the village of Leonard, and the cities of Rochester and Rochester Hills. (View map.)

The Clinton River Watershed Council selected the Stony Creek watershed as the focus of project activities for a number of reasons:

  • Local interest in opportunities to protect wetlands.
  • High density of wetlands.
  • Large proportion of natural wetland systems, as opposed to wetlands supported by legal lake levels or impoundments.
  • Population and imperviousness projections indicating rapid growth in the region.
  • Opportunity to involve both Oakland and Macomb county agencies.
