2009 Highlights: Stream Leaders

Stream Leaders provides K-12 students with an educational experience in water quality monitoring, data interpretation, and citizen action, as well as provide general information to stakeholders concerning water quality.

Stream Leaders is part of GREEN Global Rivers Environmental Education Network which is a national student monitoring network coordinated by Earth Force and 2009 marked the 20th anniversary of General Motors’ support of GREEN! Over that span of time, thousands of GM employees have worked side by side with teachers, community partners and more than 100,000 young people in more than 32 GM communities in the United States and Canada.

During 2009 over 4,100 students partnered with mentors from area businesses such as General Motors, Chrysler, Giffels Webster, and REI inc. along with CRWC volunteers to monitor local streams all over the Clinton River Watershed.

Schools from the following communities participated Armada, Auburn Hills, Chesterfield Twp., Clarkston, Clinton Twp, Grosse Pointe, Harrison Twp, Lake Orion, Macomb Twp, Macomb, Oak Park, Pontiac, Warren, Rochester, Rochester Hills, Sterling Heights, Utica, Washington Twp. and Waterford. Students from various districts presented their findings at the annual Student Congress on November 12, 2009 at the Macomb County Intermediate School District.
