SPILL IN BEAR CREEK

On Wednesday, February 7th, a water line break at a private manufacturing facility in Warren caused a potential chemical spill into Bear Creek, which flows into the Red Run. The City of Warren, Macomb County, The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), and the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) worked together to assess the spill, with the US EPA leading the clean-up efforts last week.

As of Monday, February 12, 2024, the EPA's clean-up efforts are complete and oversite is now under Michigan EGLE. The full extent and effects of the spill on Bear Creek are still being determined.

The Clinton River Watershed Council remains in close communication with Michigan EGLE and CRWC will provide more information as it becomes available. CRWC continues to recommend that members of the public avoid contact with Bear Creek and waterways downstream.
