INVASIVE SPECIES REMOVAL AT THE AVON NATURE CENTER

On Saturday, April 6, 13 people volunteered to help remove invasive species like honeysuckle, barberry, and garlic mustard to help restore the natural beauty of Avon Nature Area and the CRWC Office grounds by eliminating invasive species and preparing the area for an upcoming native plant installation.

Volunteers removed overgrown brambles from the garden beds in order to prepare them for the upcoming planting, which will benefit wildlife and pollinators. The volunteers removed roughly 0.66 acres of invasives in pockets around the site.

While removing invasives, the group made time to interact with local wildlife. Garter snakes and wild turkeys greeted the team for a short time before moving on to quieter areas until the work was concluded.

After the invasive plants were pulled, they were solarized (dried in the sun) to neutralize them so they wouldn't spread when composted.

Thank you to all those who volunteered their time to make a difference in the watershed. This would not have been possible without the hard work of our volunteers!
