Earth Day Invasive Species Removal: Jetbead

  • Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center 4101 River Bends Drive Shelby Township, MI, 48317 United States (map)

Are you looking for a meaningful and fun way to celebrate Earth Day? Join the Clinton River Watershed Council (CRWC) and the Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center for an Invasive Species Removal! We'll be targeting invasive black jetbead, a plant species that has overrun this beautiful natural space, depriving native flora and fauna of vital resources.

WHY REMOVE BLACK JETBEAD?

Black jetbead, originally from eastern Asia and introduced as an ornamental plant, has spread rapidly, outcompeting native species for sunlight and water. Its toxic fruit diminishes biodiversity and poses a threat to local ecosystems.

Black jetbead can be recognized by its white four-petaled flowers, black oval-shaped fruits, and raspberry-like leaves with serrated edges.

By removing black jetbead, we can pave the way for the resurgence of native plants like the sensitive Trillium, promoting biodiversity and creating a healthier habitat for wildlife.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

CRWC and the Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center will lead volunteers in the removal of this invasive species. Participants will be provided with gloves, knee pads, shovels, and shears. Participants should dress comfortably in clothes and shoes suitable for getting dirty.

By participating, you'll directly contribute to restoring the health of our local ecosystem, fostering biodiversity, and creating a more vibrant natural environment.

EARTH DAY CELEBRATION:

After the invasive species removal event, stick around for the Earth Day Celebration at Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Enjoy live music, food trucks, face painting, live animal programs, and more!

REGISTRATION:

Registration is now closed for this event. If you still wish to attend, please contact Pronoye Kapali at pronoye@crwc.org.

Participants should also fill out CRWC's volunteer waiver before attending.
