Curious about what kind of mushrooms you might find on local trails? Join the Clinton River Watershed Council for Nourished By Nature - Fungal Foray. We’ll bring in local fungi experts to help teach and identify the different types of mushrooms you might find! This is the latest event in our Nourished By Nature event series, in which CRWC invites watershed residents to connect with nature and have fun outside. This event is hosted in partnership with the Michigan Nature Association.
WHAT WE'LL LEARN
In this event, we'll go over the history of Lakeville Swamp Nature Sanctuary, go through the basics of locating plants, and then we'll go into the field to explore! We'll finish by identifying fungi and key plants with fungi experts, Lydia Nicholas and Henry Van Cotter, as a group!
Not only will you learn about the different types of mushrooms, but also about the unique plants that often go overlooked. Through this event, you'll gain knowledge about different biomes and habitat types.
WHO CAN ATTEND
Anyone can attend. Adults should be aware of the general hazards and risks that are associated with walking a rustic trail. Younger children must be accompanied by an adult.
WHAT TO BRING
Participants should bring a water bottle, and clothes they feel comfortable walking in. We also recommend bringing a basket or similar container. A sturdy tote bag could work, but we want to ensure that what we find in the field does not get squished while we walk. We recommend bringing a container with a flat bottom.
In any outdoor activity, participants should be aware of hazards such as poison sumac, poison ivy, mosquitoes, wasps/bees, ticks, uneven ground and slopes including mud and tree roots, and potentially wet and slippery boardwalks. For this event, we recommend pants and hiking boots, waterproof boots if they want to explore further into the sanctuary.
ARRIVAL DETAILS
Parking at the Lakeville Swamp Nature Sanctuary is limited. If you are able, we suggest parking at the Addison Township Offices at 1440 Rochester Rd, Leonard, MI 48367, and walking over to the nature sanctuary.
Note: This is not a foraging event, we will only be picking mushrooms to look at and learn for educational purposes only.
